From 1765, Burke had also served as private secretary to Lord Rockingham, and after his patron's death in 1782 he remained a chief strategist of the Rockingham party, whose command was inherited by Charles James Fox. He had served as a member of the House of Commons since 1765, where he was known for his leadership of the opposition to the American war, his plan for the reform of the king's budget, his committee reports on the conduct of the East India Company, and his substantial share in managing the impeachment of Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal. Edmund Burke was already a famous politician and moral philosopher when his Reflections on the Revolution in France was published in 1790. ![]()
